About the project

How World On Air chooses what you hear.

Last reviewed October 6, 2026

World On Air is an independently operated project for exploring live radio through places, formats and the atmosphere around a broadcast. It is built for listeners who want a clear route into real stations without an account, an app download or an endless anonymous directory.

What World On Air does

World On Air organizes publicly available station information into a visual player and a smaller set of reviewed country, state, city and genre collections. The project does not own the stations, their names, their programs or their trademarks. Its role is discovery: helping a listener find a station, understand the available location and format information, and start the station's own web stream.

The project exists to make live radio easier and more enjoyable to explore. Search visibility is useful only when the landing page also gives a listener a meaningful choice of stations and a working path to listen.

How stations are discovered

Station candidates come primarily from Radio Browser, a community-maintained directory of internet radio services. Directory records can include a station name, country, state or city, language, format tags, homepage, logo and one or more stream addresses. World On Air may also use information published by the station or its streaming provider when resolving a working feed.

Directory metadata is evidence, not proof. World On Air avoids inventing a location, schedule, ownership or format that a broadcaster has not published. City collections require credible local evidence in location fields, coordinates or relevant directory tags. Duplicate codec and bitrate versions of the same service are collapsed when they can be identified reliably.

How streams are selected and checked

  1. The station must have a usable identity and enough public metadata for the collection in which it appears.
  2. Published discovery pages use secure HTTPS stream candidates.
  3. The stream is probed before publication to confirm that it responds as audio or a supported playlist.
  4. Clearly broken, duplicated, geographically unsupported or browser-incompatible candidates are excluded from the reviewed collection.

The published discovery catalog is reviewed monthly. A review date appears on each collection, and a new date is used only when the underlying station selection has actually been checked. Radio is a live medium: a broadcaster can change a stream, schedule or metadata between reviews, so inclusion is not a promise of uninterrupted availability.

Where the audio comes from

When you press play, your browser connects directly to the broadcaster or the streaming provider selected by that broadcaster. World On Air does not relay, record or rebroadcast the audio. Because the connection is direct, the station or streaming company receives ordinary network information such as your IP address and browser details under its own policies.

If one published stream fails, the player may try another secure candidate for the same station. World On Air does not alter the program audio or insert advertising into a station's feed.

How city scenes and local context are selected

City scenes are selected from credited photography available under source-specific licenses, including images from Pexels and Wikimedia Commons. Credits identify the photographer, source and license where required. Images are prepared in responsive sizes for the player but are not presented as station-owned artwork.

When reliable city information is available, World On Air can show a matching city scene. Otherwise it uses an honestly labeled nearby, regional or national fallback rather than pretending the station is in a place the metadata does not support. Sunrise and sunset information from Open-Meteo helps choose an appropriate time-of-day scene. This visual context does not change the station's audio.

Corrections, removals and questions

If you operate a listed station, represent a rights holder, or notice inaccurate information, request a correction or removal through the contact page or email [email protected]. Include the station name, country, relevant URL, requested change and your relationship to the station or content. Reasonable requests may be verified before a change is made.
